Join us September 19 through 21 for our second annual Berthoud Literary Festival! This year we are Rooted In Story here in the Garden Spot of Colorado. This is your opportunity to interact with local authors and dive headfirst into literature.

Author Bios:
Lulu Buck
Lulu Buck is an award-winning author and educator known for her books "Sue's Sky" and "El Cielo de Susana" (Spanish edition), which focus on themes of acceptance and inclusion. She also authored a fantasy book, "Magical Golden Whistle". Beyond writing, Lulu is a consultant, creating lesson plans and curricula to accompany her books, aimed at promoting safe spaces, anti-bullying, and understanding bias.


Hermione Hoby
Hermione Hoby is the author of the novels Neon in Daylight, which was twice listed as a New York Times Editors’ Choice, and Virtue, which was shortlisted for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature award. She is a 2024 Macdowell Fellow in Literature and her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Guardian, The New York Times, and Bookforum. Raised in London, she lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Kristin Koval
Kristin Koval is a former lawyer who always wanted to be a writer but initially wandered down other paths. Her debut novel, Penitence, is a Barnes & Noble Discover Pick, a Book of the Month Pick, an Indie Next Pick, an Apple Books Staff Pick, an Apple Audiobooks Must Listen, a People Magazine Book of the Week, and a Goodreads Most Anticipated Pick and Hottest Debut selection. She lives in Boulder, Colorado and Park City, Utah with her husband, two sons and two great danes.

Elizabeth Lowham
Elizabeth Lowham started writing at fifteen years old and never stopped. She is the multi-award-winning author of Casters and Crowns, as well as other YA fantasy novels. A fan of all things romance, she is living out her own happily ever after with her husband and kids in a story that includes an abundance of snuggles, cookies, and, of course, cozy books.

R.L. Maizes
​R.L. Maizes is the author of the forthcoming novel A Complete Fiction, out November 4. Her debut novel, Other People’s Pets, won the 2021 Colorado Book Award in Fiction and was a Library Journal Best Debut of Summer/Fall 2020. She is also the author of the short story collection We Love Anderson Cooper. Her story A Cat Called Grievous will be performed at Stories on Stage at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center in Denver on September 28. Check it out! Maizes lives in Niwot, Colorado.

Nina McConigley
Nina McConigley was born in Singapore and raised in Wyoming. Her short-story collection Cowboys and East Indians was the winner of the PEN Open Book Award and a High Plains Book Award. Her play based on Cowboys and East Indians was commissioned by the Denver Center for Performing Arts and will have its world premiere in 2026. She has two books forthcoming: her essay collection will be published by the University of Georgia Press. And her novel, How to Commit a Postcolonial Murder, is forthcoming with Pantheon in January 2026. She teaches at Colorado State University.

Laura Resau
Laura Resau is the author of The Alchemy of Flowers, her debut novel for adults, and eleven acclaimed books for young people. Her books have won five Colorado Book Awards and spots on “best-of” booklists from Oprah, the American Library Association, and more. Trilingual, she’s lived in Provence and Oaxaca, and studied cultural anthropology and languages. She teaches graduate creative writing at Western Colorado University.
